Split is the largest city in Dalmatia, and the 2nd largest city in Croatia. The city center, located on the east side of the Marjan Peninsula, which is today a protected park-forest, consists of the ancient Diocletian's Palace from the 4th century, which is under UNESCO protection. Split's Peristyle is considered the most beautiful square in Split, but also one of the most beautiful in all of Croatia. The Golden Gate, the most beautiful entrance to Diocletian's Palace, is almost completely preserved, and the statue of Gregory of Nin is located near the Golden Gate and is a masterpiece of the most famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. Splitska Riva is the most famous promenade in Split and beyond. The liveliest area in Split is the market, where you can taste the rich flavors of Dalmatian and Mediterranean specialties. Bačvice Beach, the most popular in Split, is well known for picigin, a game that is a protected UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. Marmontova Street is a historically substantial street. In 1922, a library and a reading room were founded in it. It also houses the first Karaman cinema in Split. It also has a unique fish market.
